While I do subscribe to the mantra of "not expecting anyone to do that which you are not prepared to do yourself", do you think, as an empathetic leader, it is also important to "not expect anyone to do that which they haven't been provided adequate reason or energy to do"?

I know the frustration (and sometimes feels like futility) of trying to 'pull people along', to make them change. Your comments about leading from behind really spoke to this. But perhaps as long as people who are resistant to change are being primarily framed as luddites and 'Negative Nancies' (not to say that you do this, but it happens...surely you've seen it?) then such people will continue to fulfil the prophesy?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts Roger. As always, you manage to take hold of the world around us, peel back the layers to reveal raw and powerful connections to our world as educators, and create a currency that sets the scene for educational leadership that is meaningful, exciting, real and focused .

You wrote: " Within our work, try to maintain an awareness of not only the rearview mirror, but also the vast horizon of possibility in front." All too often, we cling to the past, or even in fact, to the present, because its comfortable or safe, especially compared to that scene in the rearview mirror or to a future that is unknown, different, new. But if we use the mirror to reflect, learn, develop, grow, strengthen, then that horizon will indeed be vast and exciting.

As an educational leader I find your posts inspirational and I very much enjoy reflecting on my own leadership within the constructs you write about.

Would you mind if I wrote a short paragraph on my blog with a link to this post so that my staff could read first hand the type of leadership I try to shape within my own school?

Thanks again Roger, fantastic post.
